"The Revolution Lies Within"
My inspiration for this work of art came from the famous quote "The revolution that takes place in your head, nobody will ever see that." by jazz poet, musician, author and spoken word performer Gil Scott-Heron (1970’s). This quote emphasizes the personal and transformative nature of change. It highlights that true revolution begins within an individual's mindset, a shift that is not observable externally.
I wanted communicate with strong intention and visual impact that this internal revolution is not something that can be witnessed or recorded by others (hence the head wrap).
It is a personal journey of growth and transformation that starts from within. This piece has several metaphors and symbols embedded to add to the narrative of this young Black male central character. He’s adorned in a military-styled overcoat contrasting the colour of historic oppressive colonial powers with the powerful symbolism of the iconic Black Panther balanced on both sides of his chest symbolizing Black Love, Strength and Defence of community embedded in to the fabric of the coat in resistance to the very powers that seek to oppress progress.
His eyes and head are beautifully wrapped in fabric of the Black Liberation Flag in the colours of Red, Black and Green symbolizing the journey he will embark on with his inner revolution to seek the hidden truth about his ancestors and the rich legacy of Kings and Queens he has descended from. But first he must first transform internally before he can affect change externally in the world.
His revolution will not televised because it is sparked in the silence within, a storm beneath his skull, where his mental chains are broken thought by thought.
Because this revolution - Our revolution, was never just a protest in the street. - It was the fire lit when we dared to know ourselves.
